Western Health engaged Microcosm to design a compact visitor map to support navigation across the new Footscray Hospital precinct. The project required clear map making and information design to translate complex architectural planning into an accessible, hand-held guide for patients, staff and visitors.
Produced as a passport-sized Z-Card, the map combines a precinct overview with detailed floor maps for multiple levels of the hospital. Developed as part of a broader communications rollout, the piece supports orientation, safety awareness and a welcoming first experience within the new state-of-the-art facility.

The new Footscray Hospital is a large, multi-building healthcare environment with layered circulation paths and diverse services. Western Health required a map design solution that could simplify complex spatial information while maintaining clarity, accuracy and strong brand alignment.
Working from architectural drawings during construction, Microcosm needed to establish a clear visual hierarchy across multiple maps within the constraints of a compact folding format. Emergency services, entrances, exits and muster points needed to be clearly identified, while typography, colour and layout had to support accessibility for a broad audience.
Microcosm applied a structured wayfinding and information design process to develop a cohesive suite of maps tailored to the Z-Card format. Site visits during construction, combined with collaboration with Western Health stakeholders, informed the map making approach and ensured the layouts reflected real visitor journeys.
Colour-coded service zones, clear iconography and a detailed legend were introduced to support intuitive navigation. The visual language aligns with Western Health’s established brand system while reflecting the contemporary architecture of the new facility. Coordination with the specialist Z-Card production team ensured accurate folding, durable construction and a high-quality printed outcome.
